“What would I use as a metaphor for the best part of my life if there were no longer any sweets?”

Thien Pham, "I LIKE EATING"

Born in Vietnam but raised in San Francisco's Bay Area, Thien Pham is a cartoonist known for illustrating Gene Luen Yang’s Level Up and his solo graphic novel, Sumo. I Like Eating is a reoccurring comic series about his life and food adventures, published in the East Bay Express

“I started I Like Eating in 2006, when the editor of the East Bay Express asked me to pitch a strip. I wanted to do the comic because, well, I like eating, but when I started I must say my knowledge of food was lacking. I wanted to do a food review that was as much about the restaurant and food as about me and my relationship to eating in a particular place. Over the years of doing the strip, I've done done everything from hole-in-the-wall bargain eateries to Michelin-starred fancy restaurants, and my taste in food has pretty much come full circle. My current obsession (as evident in the newer strip) is rooted in exploring regional and cultural foods and their histories.”  —Thien Pham
